China’s evolving journal policies are reshaping the global research landscape. In 2023, Chinese researchers produced nearly 1 million peer-reviewed papers, representing over 27% of global output, yet fewer than 5% appeared in domestic journals. With the China Journal Excellence Action Plan (Phase II) and related initiatives promoting high-quality local publishing, that share could rise toward 30% within a few years, potentially altering submission flows, partnerships, and global influence.
Building on discussions from the STM Frankfurt China Symposium and collaboration with the Society of China University Journals, this session will provide updates on developments within China, alongside data analysis, risk assessment scenarios, and examples of how Western publishers are adapting. Topics include journal “white lists,” research evaluation drivers beyond Impact Factors, society partnerships, and data-driven risk insights.
Panelists will explore strategies such as co-publishing models, editorial capacity building, society partnerships, and deeper engagement with Chinese researchers, institutions, and funders.
